For eight generations, my family has proudly called Greenville home, giving me a deep personal connection to the stories, landmarks, and people that shape our community. Preserving Upstate history has always been a family tradition—one first captured when my cousin Choice published the original edition of this pictorial history back in 1983.
My own passion for uncovering the past started early. As a dedicated history and genealogy enthusiast, I spent many weekends walking local historic cemeteries, meticulously researching records, and documenting the final resting places of ancestors. Pairing that love for history with an interest in photography, I know firsthand how a single, carefully preserved image can bring our shared heritage vividly back to life.
A proud 1995 graduate of Greenville High School, this community is where my roots run deepest—it’s even where I met my husband, Wil, in the cafeteria back in 1991. Today, we are blessed to raise our son, Mac, in Greenville, alongside our dog Daffy and cat Calliope.
About Choice
Choice McCoin (1934 – 2011) was a sixth-generation Greenville resident, educator, and historian dedicated to preserving local heritage. The daughter of E. George McCoin and Trudy Cleveland McCoin, she completed her early education at Ashley Hall before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Furman University. She later received a Master of Arts in American History from Emory University.
For twenty-two years, Choice taught history and English in Greenville public schools and at Greenville Technical College. Alongside her teaching career, she was an active freelance writer and published author whose articles appeared in numerous publications. Her work also included writing scripts for a monthly historical radio broadcast, earning her recognition in Personalities of the South.
A lifelong civic leader, she served on the administrative board of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and was the first female president of the Greenville County Historical Society, having also served on its board of directors. Her social and community involvement spanned decades. She was presented at the inaugural ball of the Greenville Debutante Club, founded the McCoin Book Club in 1956, and remained an active member of the Thursday Club, The Assembly, The Junior League, the Greenville Country Club, and the Third Thursday Lunch Bunch.
